Sacred city of the Maghreb, Kairouan was founded by Okba ibn Nafaa in the late 7th century and was the first Muslim capital. It flourished in the 9th century under the Aghlabid dynasty and, even after the capital was moved to Tunis, remains an important religious center, renowned for its rich architectural heritage, including the Great Mosque and the Mosque of the Three Doors.
