Located an hour and a half from Tunis, Dougga, formerly known as Thugga, is a majestic archaeological site and one of the most iconic in Tunisia, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built on a hill overlooking a fertile plain, it was the capital of a Libyco-Punic state before the Roman annexation of Numidia. Under Roman and Byzantine rule, Dougga thrived but began to decline during the Islamic period. The impressive ruins visible today vividly illustrate the daily life of a small Roman town at the edge of the Empire, reflecting its historical and cultural significance.
